Zazie Beetz's Sophie lacked agency in Joker precisely because most of the scenes featuring the character were actually part of Arthur’s delusions. In reality, Sophie barely interacted with Arthur, yet the film had shown an entire love story about them. Something similar cannot be done in Joker: Folie à Deux, as Harley Quin is expected to be as much of a lead character as the Joker. Joker 2’s title itself reveals that Lady Gaga will be a co-lead alongside Joaquin Phoenix. It is difficult to imagine that the entirety of Harley Quinn’s story in Joker 2 could be the result of Arhtur’s delusion, mostly because Harley is too big of a character. Many Joker 2 theories try to explain how Gaga’s Harley Quinn will fit into Joker 2 – from the classic Arkham psychiatrist storyline from the comics to Harley being one of the Joker’s fans from the first movie. After the solid success of Todd Phillips' first Joker movie, audiences were naturally excited about the prospect of a follow-up film, as while the original could have remained a standalone spinoff based around the Joker's ambiguous origins, there are several plot threads that also teased potential further installments. As a result, the announcement of the sequel led to much speculation regarding which path would be taken with it - and the reveal that Joker 2 will be a musical thriller only increased the number of theories on the topic. In fact, for a good period of time, many outright didn't believe Joker: Folie à Deux would be a musical, as this was something of a large departure from the first film. Even Joker 2 composer Hildur Guðnadóttir described the decision as "surprising", though this was in the context of explaining that "I think it’s somehow logical at the same time. It’s both logical and also very surprising. For me as well as the audience." The composer's assurance that this unusual decision is logical already appears to have some weight to it even before the movie releases, as there are various reasons this call for Joker 2 makes sense, most especially given how it ties to Harley Quinn and her on-screen history. In that context, the dance becomes a curiously morbid tribute to Joker as a fanaticist. Particularly as he would go on to murder Robert De Niro's Murray Franklin very nearly after his dance. That alone suggests the dangerous idolization that Joker 2 seems to be invested is as an idea. So far, it remains unclear if Joker: Folie à Deux will depict Harley as Joker's psychiatrist like in the comics. There have been theories that they are both patients of Arkham Asylum. Lady Gaga's Harley was recently seen in a mugshot image, seemingly confirming the suggestion. Set photos and videos have also given a good look at her Harley costume. Based on the design, it is likely meant to be reminiscent of Phoenix's Joker suit. Needless to say, Lady Gaga as Harley is going to be one of the coolest 2024's comic book movie moments. With the musical aspect as well, it will be intriguing to see what Phillips has in store for audience members. Todd Phillips celebrated the wrap of filming on Joker sequel Joker: Folie À Deux with an Instagram post featuring stars Joaquin Phoenix and Lady Gaga. With Phillips now off to the edit "cave" (as he describes it), speculation can really start to bubble up as to what this sequel to the Oscar-winning original is actually about. We do know that it'll be set partly in Arkham Asylum (where Phoenix's wannabe comedian-turned-psychopathic clown figure ended up at the close of the original) and that it'll feature a big musical element. Oh, and we're long past the point where anything is debating whether Gaga's playing Harley Quinn (traditionally the Joker's great love/victim) we're all more intrigued to lean what spin Phillips has put on her and their dynamic. It seems that in the movie, Harley Quinn has two main looks. We’ve seen her with long blonde hair and little makeup in normal clothes, and then what seems to be her after her total descent into madness. The new image of Gaga as the Joker's infamous paramour Harley Quinn/Dr. Harleen Quinzel sees her donning smudged make-up and standing in what could be an elevator - similar to the one we see in Arthur Fleck/the Joker's apartment block during the 2019 film. The new film won’t be part of the new DC Universe taking shape under the leadership of James Gunn and Peter Safran, as it will fall under the DC Elseworlds label which would also include Matt Reeves’ The Batman 2. Although Joker 2 may have wrapped, the sequel isn’t set to be released until October 4, 2024.

The ending of Joker (2019) reveals that a lot of what happened to and around Arthur Fleck (Joaquin Phoenix), including most of his interactions with Sophie (Zazie Beetz), was a figment of his imagination. Joker’s unreliable narrator reveal changes every scene that came before it and makes a rewatch of the film a lot more interesting. However, now that Joker 2 is happening, not everything that worked in the first film will necessarily work in the sequel. While Joker works perfectly as a self-contained movie, the fact that a Joker sequel is happening is hardly a surprise. Joker (2019) broke the billion-dollar barrier at the worldwide box office and is currently the highest-grossing R-Rated movie of all time. In addition, Joaquin Phoenix’s Oscar-winning performance as the Joker was just too good not to be revisited in some form. After their meet-cute in an elevator, audiences watched Fleck and Dumond's romance grow throughout Joker, and the eventual reveal - both to the audience and to Fleck himself - that it had been imaginary aided in pushing Fleck over the edge, completing his transformation into the Joker. Joker: Folie à Deux could invert this twist, if Joker and Harley Quinn's relationship from DC Comics is more accurately depicted, as Fleck could become the one in control. Typically, Harley Quinn's origin story sees her madly in love with Joker in DC Comics, though the latter strings her along, using her for his own benefit when it becomes necessary to him. If this dynamic is depicted in Joker: Folie à Deux, Arthur Fleck will go from imagining a relationship to feel connection with someone, to actively rejecting affection and toying with a character who adores him. This drastic shift in Phoenix's villainous character could be an interesting story to explore in Joker: Folie à Deux. Back in 2019, Warner Bros. and DC explored a different version of Batman’s most famous villain in a completely different universe in Joker. Instead of focusing on Bruce Wayne/Batman and introducing the Clown Prince of Crime through him, Joker was all about the story of Arthur Fleck, a failed stand-up comedian dealing with mental illness who is pushed to his limits by the decay in Gotham City and some shocking reveals in his personal life. That, among other factors, led to Arthur taking a much more violent and vindictive path that culminated with him becoming the leader of a violent countercultural revolution against the rich in Gotham, and thanks to his stand-up comedy efforts and the clown makeup he wore during his shocking TV appearance at the end of Joker, led to him being labeled as such. Joker: Folie à Deux will catch up with Arthur in Arkham State Hospital, where he was last seen at the end of the first movie and where he will meet Dr. Harleen Quinzel/Harley Quinn (Lady Gaga). Joker 2 will also be a musical, which along with the events of the first movie, Arthur’s condition, and Harley’s appearance, has led to various theories on what the movie will be about, and here are some of them. Director Todd Philip’s and Joaquin Phoenix are both returning and it seems they will be joined by a new co-star. More on that in a bit. The original Joker film is–without a doubt–one of the best DC movies ever made. Some may say it’s right up there with The Dark Knight and The Batman. The film made over a billion dollars at the box office and received 11 Oscar nominations including Best Picture. So the studio wanting a sequel isn’t a surprise in the slightest. But the fact that Phillips and Phoenix were also interested in doing a sequel tells me they must have something really special in mind. The first Joker was dark, brutal, and real. They took the most beloved comic book villain of all time and made a film that’s a social commentary on the dangers of our society abandoning the mentally ill. But they simultaneously delivered a unique origin for the clown prince of crime–or did they? Todd Phillips has said that Arthur Fleck, Joaquin Phoenix's Joker, may not be the real Joker. It’s been theorized that perhaps the “movement” Arthur started inspired the individual who eventually becomes the iconic Batman villain. Keep in mind that we saw the classic alleyway murder of the Wayne’s during the Joker riot that Arthur inspired. So Arthur Fleck and his Joker movement were directly responsible for the death of Bruce Wayne’s parents. Perhaps the man who pulled the trigger will go on to become THE Joker who terrorizes Gotham City for decades. That brings us to the title of the sequel, Folie a Deux, which translates to “madness for two.” Like I said before, the first film was a social commentary on society ignoring the reality of mental illness. The sequel's title implies that it will continue this commentary. Folie a Deux is a rare mental disorder also known as Shared Psychotic disorder. Essentially meaning that the same or at least two very similar mental disorders could affect two individuals simultaneously and play off of one another. The individuals who become intertwined in this situation are typically close in proximity and usually family. Mother-daughter, sister-brother, father-son. Willem Dafoe has been fancast as the Joker for years. If you wanted to do the most comic accurate Joker in a live action setting, Willem Dafoe would be your guy. On numerous occasions, Dafoe has spoken about the demands for him to play the Joker. In fact one particular moment is sticking out in my mind after hearing the title Joker: Folie a Deux. Dafoe said in an interview with GQ in January of 2022, quote “There is something interesting about, like, if there was a Joker imposter. So it would be possible to have not dueling Jokers but someone that [claims] to be the Joker that isn’t the Joker. And that kind of opens up the possibility of an interesting story, particularly if you had Joaquin Phoenix’s Joker, and then you had someone who was either imitating or riffing off what he did.” Fast forward six months and this statement seems less like a fantasy and more like an idea that was pitched to him when he was offered the part in the movie. Now I want to be very clear that this has not in any way been confirmed by the filmmakers. We’re merely speculating that Dafoe is involved based on what we think is pretty compelling evidence. There have been many different iterations of the Joker throughout the years, and Joaquin Phoenix's Arthur Fleck is one of the most unique. He’s not evil, he’s not cruel, he doesn’t want to watch the world burn. He’s just broken. He’s a mentally ill individual who’s been beaten down by a society that refuses to help people in his situation. He feels ignored and looked down upon because he is ignored and looked down upon.
